the world from my hammock

This blog is all me. I'll post pictures that make me smile, make me think, question conventional attitudes. Sometimes I'll write posts but most of the time I'll be reblogging photos I find on tumblr. Feel free to ask me questions if you like. I'll probably be spending quite a bit of time here. I hope you enjoy viewing the world from my hammock for however long you are here.

The pictures I post are either mine, found on tumblr, or are assumed to be of the public domain. If I inadvertently post any copyrighted work, please let me know.

Ask me anything

  • Virgo: What time is the concert?
  • Friend: 6PM
  • Virgo: What time are we leaving?
  • Friend: 5PM
  • Virgo: Will that be early enough?
  • Friend: Well it only takes around half an hour to get there
  • Virgo: Yes, but what days have you driven there? and was it during those times?
  • Friend: Um yes I'm sure I have before
  • Virgo: No. Are you definitely sure?
  • Friend: ...yeah
  • Virgo: And you've got the tickets?
  • Friend: Yes.
  • Friend: You wrapped them in bubble wrap
  • Friend: tied a padlock around them
  • Friend: and put them in your box under your ten other boxes in your box cupboard
  • Friend: ...you wanted to be sure we got there

This particular moment in Star Trek is actually quite important. A lot of people don’t realise that understanding something is not the same as approving of something. This particular episode (A Taste of Armageddon) had a civilization where war was fought on computers instead of on the battlefield and instead of people dying in combat they would send the calculated amount of “casualities” into a camp to die. Kirk is outraged completely by this and rightly should be, but Spock is not so overtly disapproving. He understands why they might think their solution is better for their civilization and takes the time to think about why they are doing it. Even though he can understand why, he still believes it is wrong for them to be doing it.

There is a separation between understanding something and  approving of something that a lot of people seem to miss.

Veronica Lake with magazines in a tailored suit and hat.
Lake’s breakthrough role was in the 1941 war drama I Wanted Wings. The film was a major hit in which Lake played the second female lead. It was during the filming of I Wanted Wings that Lake developed her signature look. Lake’s long blonde hair accidentally fell over her right eye during a take and created a “peek-a-boo” effect. The hairstyle became Lake’s trademark and was widely copied by women.

I’m in DC this week for work. I ate at a café called Bullfeathers and decided to take a stroll around some of the monuments. I went to the Supreme Court and saw 6 protestors (no clue what they’re protesting b/c their mouths were taped shut), then walked by the Capital Building and the Library of Congress. I’d love to go inside the library but I may not have the opportunity.
